House of Maximon

Legend has it that Maximón, a folk saint revered by the Mayans in Guatemala slept with all the women in the village while the men were working the fields. Upon their return they were so angry they chopped off his arms and legs, hence why effigies of him are usually seen without limbs, wearing a hat, with a cigar in his mouth. He is also recognised as the keeper of tobacco and a symbol of male sexual power. Other than sounding like a total stud who couldn't keep it in his pants, he was also known to stay out late drinking alcohol. It is no wonder then that House of Maximon has been established to celebrate and honour him.

It feels a bit like South of the Border meets Day of the Dead with tequila and mezcal flowing freely, and to make things even more deliciously morbid they have their own very well respected comedy club run in conjunction with Crab Lab. The atmosphere on those nights is surreal as you are surrounded by images of devilish women and men shooting laser beams from their eyes with shrieks of laughter ringing in your ears. Hang around the bar close to the entry and you'll even catch a glimpse of Maximón himself staring at you from behind a cage observing all the drinking and debauchery within. His passion and desire are infectious, this is his home and there are no rules. If only the walls could talk.
